Matchday preview

How should we play on Sunday?

Three real Game Cards, exactly as a coach sees them. PlayTactiq helps you recognise the situation and say something useful to your players — it does not pretend to know the right answer.

Starting plan

Our starting shape

US
GKDEFDEFMIDMIDMIDFWD

Two defenders, three across the middle, one striker.

What do I tell the players?

  • Defenders split — big and wide
  • Wingers, feet on the line
  • Head up, take a touch, then pass

What's happening?

We line up 2-3-1: two defenders, three across the middle, one striker. At U10 the whole game tends to collapse into one cluster around the ball, and the shape disappears within a minute of kick-off.

Where's the space?

The pitch is at its biggest when the two wide midfielders stay near the touchlines and the defenders split either side of the keeper. That stretches the other team and opens the middle for the central midfielder.

What do we change?

Start every goal kick with the defenders wide of the posts and the centre midfielder showing for the ball. Ask the wide players to hold their line until the ball comes to them.

Why this card?

We don't have this exact matchup yet. This covers the principle that applies when they press high.

Opposition change

Their 3-2-1

USTHEM
GKDEFDEFMIDMIDMIDFWDGKDEFDEFDEFMIDMIDFWD

Their two midfielders cannot cover the whole width.

What do I tell the players?

  • Space is outside them, not through them
  • Switch it — look at the other side
  • Striker, come and get it

What's happening?

They play three at the back with two in midfield and one up front. Their back three is hard to get past centrally, but two midfielders cannot cover the whole width of the pitch.

Where's the space?

The space is outside their midfield pair, not through it. When their two midfielders both drift toward the ball, the opposite side of the pitch is completely empty.

What do we change?

Get the ball wide early and switch it when the far side opens up. Ask the striker to drop between their midfield and defence rather than standing on the back three.

Why this card?

We don't have this exact matchup yet. This covers the principle that applies when they press high.

Out of possession

If they press high

USTHEM
GKDEFDEFMIDMIDMIDFWDGKDEFDEFDEFMIDMIDFWD

Their midfield steps up; the space is behind them.

What do I tell the players?

  • Find the spare player
  • If they jump, play beyond them
  • Make the pitch big

What's happening?

They push their striker and both midfielders onto us as soon as we get the ball, so we are trying to play out with three opponents inside our own half.

Where's the space?

A team pressing that high leaves the space behind their midfield wide open. If we get one pass past the first presser, we are running at a back three with numbers.

What do we change?

Do not force it through the middle. The keeper or a defender goes long to the far side, or the centre midfielder drops in to make a spare player. Either way, play past the press rather than through it.

Why this card?

You're playing 2-3-1, facing 3-2-1, and selected "They press high".

Common questions

What is a Matchday Game Card?
A single tactical situation explained for a grassroots coach: what is happening, where the space is, what to change, and up to three short cues you can shout from the touchline. Each card has a pitch diagram.
Does PlayTactiq tell me the right tactic?
No. Matchday helps you recognise common situations, understand sensible options and communicate them simply to your players. Game Cards are curated coaching guidance, not guaranteed predictions — the coach stays in control.
Is the tactical advice appropriate for young age groups?
Yes, by design. The guidance adapts to your age group and game format. Anti-developmental advice — such as protecting a lead by dropping everyone behind the ball — is unavailable at younger stages rather than merely discouraged.
Which game formats does Matchday cover?
Matchday launches with 7v7 and 9v9, with 11v11 following, then the smaller formats. Formats that are not live yet say so rather than showing you an empty plan.
