U12 marks the transition to full 11v11 football — the format players will use for the rest of their careers. It's a significant step up in pitch size, physical demand, and tactical complexity. Players need to cover more ground, hold their positions more consistently, and understand how their role connects to the rest of the team.
These U12 session plans are written for grassroots coaches working with 11 and 12-year-old players. Each session is structured around 60 minutes of training and focuses on one theme that translates directly to the 11v11 game: passing through lines, pressing as a defensive unit, finishing in the final third, and more.
The challenge at U12 is managing a larger squad across a bigger pitch without losing coaching quality. The sessions below use rotation-based formats that keep all players active while you coach the key theme across all groups simultaneously.
What's included in each session
Each U12 session includes a warm-up, two or three position-aware practices, and an 11v11 game. Animated diagrams show full-pitch movement and unit organisation. Printable session card included.

Coaching principles for U12
Positional discipline starts now
At U12, players need to start understanding why they stay in their position — not just what the position is. Use the practices to show players the space that opens up when teammates hold their shape, and the chaos that results when they don't. Tactical awareness through direct experience beats explanation.
Linking the defensive and attacking lines
The most important passing connection at 11v11 is centre-back to central midfielder. Use possession-based practices that specifically reward this pass and the movement that follows it. Teams that can play out from the back have a structural advantage at grassroots level.
Finishing: volume over complexity
At U12, the best finishing practice is high repetition: lots of shots, lots of crosses, lots of 1v1s with the goalkeeper. Technique refinement matters, but volume of attempts builds confidence faster. Every U12 player should take at least 8–10 shots per training session.
Set pieces are tactical tools now
By U12, teams can run meaningful corner, free kick, and throw-in routines. Dedicate 10 minutes per session to set pieces. Attacking and defending set pieces from organised positions wins more matches at grassroots level than almost any other single factor.
