Defending Transitions: A Coaching Guide

Defensive transition is the moment possession changes. Young players do not need a stopwatch or a rigid system; they need a simple shared picture: the closest player pressures, teammates recover towards goal and the team communicates early.

Name the immediate reaction: press, recover or cover.
Use small-sided turnover games so the decision feels real.
Praise quick recovery runs as much as winning the ball.
Adapt the detail to the players’ age and confidence.
