U15 and U16 Football Session Plans

75 minutes · 11v11 · 12 sessions available

U15 and U16 football is the most tactically and physically demanding stage of grassroots youth football. Players are approaching adult capability, matches are increasingly competitive, and coaches can introduce the full range of tactical concepts: high pressing, structured build-up play, set-piece organisations, and game management.

These session plans are written for grassroots coaches working with 14–16 year old players in a UK club context. Sessions run to 75 minutes and are structured with tactical specificity — each practice has a clear phase-of-play context and coaches players through the decisions they'll face in that situation.

At this age, the gap between coaches who plan tactically and those who run the same fitness drills every week is most visible in match performance. The sessions below give U15 and U16 coaches the tactical preparation material to develop players who understand the game, not just the skills.

What's included in each session

Each U15/U16 session includes a warm-up, two tactical practices with phase-of-play coaching points, and a competitive 11v11 game. Animated diagrams show pressing shapes, combination patterns, and defensive organisation. Printable session card included.

Coaching principles for U15–U16

1

High pressing requires fitness and structure

A high press only works if players can sustain it for 90 minutes. Use high-tempo, short-duration practices (3v2s, 4v3s) to build both the tactical understanding and the physical capacity to press in the top third. Structure the press around clear defensive triggers and recovery positions.

2

Game management is a coachable skill

U15/U16 players benefit from understanding how to manage a game — when to slow down play, when to take a corner quickly, how to set up defensively with a one-goal lead. Include game management scenarios in 11v11 sessions: "you're 1–0 up with 10 minutes left, here's your shape."

3

Set pieces decide close matches

At this age, grassroots matches between evenly-matched teams are often decided by set pieces. Spend 15 minutes per week on attacking and defending corners, free kicks, and throw-ins. Players who have drilled their set-piece roles execute them under pressure; those who haven't improvise.

4

Individual tactical roles over generic drills

A U16 left winger, central midfielder, and centre-back have fundamentally different jobs. Generic dribbling and passing drills still matter, but the most effective coaching at this age is position-specific: what does this player need to do better in their specific role? Use small positional groups where possible.
