U8 football is 5v5 on a small pitch with simplified rules — and that format is perfect for young players who are still building their fundamental movement skills alongside their ball skills. Sessions at this age should be fast-moving, fun, and full of touches.
These U8 session plans are written for grassroots coaches working with 7 and 8-year-old players in a UK youth football setting. Each session targets a specific technical theme — dribbling, passing, shooting, defending, or pressing — with drills that work in small groups and build naturally into a small-sided game.
At U8, the job of the coach is to create an environment where players want to try things. That means celebrating attempts, not just outcomes, and keeping instructions short and concrete.
What's included in each session
Each U8 session plan includes a warm-up activity, two focused practices with coaching points, and a 5v5 small-sided game. Animated diagrams show drill setup and player movement. A printable session card is included.

Coaching principles for U8
Maximum touches, minimum waiting
At U8 the biggest mistake is large groups. Keep groups to 3 or 4 maximum so every player has a ball for most of the session. If you have 16 players, run 4 groups of 4 simultaneously — not 2 groups of 8 with a queue.
Dribbling is the foundation
U8 players who can dribble confidently in 1v1 situations develop faster than those drilled into passing early. Passing becomes more effective when it's a player's choice, not their only option. Prioritise ball mastery drills in every session.
Shooting sessions build confidence
Scoring is the most motivating outcome at this age. End every session with a shooting or finishing activity and make sure every player scores at least once. Confidence built at U8 carries through to U12 and beyond.
Keep rules simple and consistent
When changing rules mid-game (e.g. "only score if you score with your left foot"), give one rule at a time and apply it consistently. Multiple overlapping rules confuse U8 players and reduce enjoyment.
