U9 is one of the most important stages in a young player's development. Players at this age are moving from purely exploratory play into structured football — learning to pass intentionally, read movement, and apply the skills they built at U6–U8 in a 7v7 format.
The sessions below are designed specifically for U9 grassroots coaches in the UK. Each one covers a different technical or tactical theme, with drills that are appropriately scaled for 8 and 9-year-old players: shorter pitch dimensions, small-sided games, and coaching points that focus on positive reinforcement rather than complex instruction.
At U9 level, the golden rule is touches over tactics. Every drill in these session plans keeps the ball-to-player ratio high and the standing-around-waiting ratio low. Players should be active for the majority of the session.
What's included in each session
Each U9 session plan includes a structured warm-up, two or three main practices with coaching points, a small-sided game, and a cool-down. Animated drill diagrams show player movement and starting positions on a scaled 7v7 pitch. A printable session sheet is included for pitchside use.

Coaching principles for U9
Ball mastery before passing
At U9, confident dribbling and close control should come before team passing patterns. Players who trust their first touch make better decisions when they do combine. Start each session block with individual or 1v1 ball work before moving to passing exercises.
Positive reinforcement only
Criticism of mistakes at this age reduces risk-taking and slows skill acquisition. Acknowledge what players did well first, then offer one specific improvement. "Great effort to take him on — next time try your left foot in that situation" beats "don't just run into them."
Small-sided games as the main event
The FA recommends that 3v3 to 5v5 small-sided games make up at least 50% of a U9 session. Use the practices to set up a theme, then let players express it in a small game. Coaching in the game is more effective than pausing drills.
One coaching point per practice
U9 players retain one instruction well. Two or three is too many. Choose the single most important thing you want players to improve in each practice and focus all your coaching interventions on that alone.
